An astringent is the step most people skip and oily skin misses most.
Its job is narrow but real: after cleansing, it removes whatever residue is left behind, restores the skin's surface pH, and temporarily tightens the appearance of open pores. On oily and combination skin — particularly through the T-zone where pores are widest — that visible tightening is the whole point.
It also matters for what comes next. Skin that still has cleanser residue on it does not absorb a serum or treatment cream properly. The astringent clears the way.
Sweep it across the face with cotton after cleansing, avoiding the eye area, then follow with your treatment step. Morning and evening.
In the TJs brightening routine it sits after the Whitening Face Wash or Milky Cleansing Lotion, and before the Whitening Serum or Herbal Fairness Cream.
If your skin runs dry or sensitive, this is the one step in the range you can comfortably leave out — astringents are formulated for skin with oil to remove.
- Do I actually need a toner?
- On oily skin, it earns its place — it clears residue so your treatment step absorbs, and visibly tightens open pores. On dry or sensitive skin it is the most skippable step in the range.
- Where does it go in my routine?
- After cleansing, before serum or moisturiser.
