Pigmentation and dark spots: what actually works

Niacinamide, mulberry bark, liquorice root and retinol have real evidence behind them. Here is what each one does, and the one step that decides whether any of it holds.

Pigmentation is the most common thing Pakistani women ask a beautician about, and the most oversold. Almost everything marketed for it promises a transformation in a fortnight. Almost nothing delivers one, because pigment sits deeper than a two-week product can reach.

What does work is unglamorous: a few genuinely-studied ingredients, applied consistently, with daily sun protection underneath the whole thing.

The ingredients with evidence

Niacinamide (vitamin B3)

One of the best-studied non-prescription ingredients for uneven tone. It interferes with the transfer of pigment to the surface of the skin, and it is unusually well tolerated — it rarely causes the irritation that stronger actives do. That combination is why it appears in almost every serious brightening formula.

Mulberry bark

Both paper mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera) and white mulberry (Morus alba) have been studied for their effect on pigment production. They are gentle enough to use daily.

Liquorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra)

The gentlest of the group, which is exactly why it belongs in products for sensitive or reactive skin. If stronger actives have irritated your face before, start here.

Retinol

The heavyweight. It speeds up cell turnover, which is what brings pigmented cells to the surface and away. It is also the one that demands respect: use it at night, introduce it slowly, and never without sunscreen the following day.

Where to find them

TJs Herbal Fairness Cream is the most complete formula in the range — niacinamide, sodium ascorbyl phosphate (a stable vitamin C), acetyl glucosamine, both mulberry extracts, green tea and madecassoside. It also contains UV filters, which is unusual and genuinely useful.

TJs Whitening Face Wash is the liquorice-root option, and its pack states it is designed for sensitive skin.

TJs Whitening Serum is the most concentrated step, for pigmentation that has not shifted with a basic routine.

For the body — arms, neck, old marks — TJs Whitening Lotion uses retinol with neem seed oil and liquorice. Body pigmentation is the problem almost nobody formulates for.

The step that decides everything

Sunscreen. Not as an extra. As the foundation.

Pigmentation is caused by ultraviolet light. Every hour of unprotected daylight tells your skin to produce more pigment, and it does not care how much you spent on serum that morning. A brightening routine without daily sun protection is a bucket with a hole in it.

This matters more here than in most places. Pakistan gets strong UV for most of the year, and UVA — the wavelength that drives pigmentation rather than burning — passes straight through window glass. Sitting near a window at work counts as exposure.

TJs Sun Block SPF-40 uses avobenzone, one of the few widely-available filters with real UVA coverage, plus titanium dioxide as a physical filter.

A realistic timeline

Eight to twelve weeks of daily use, with sun protection, before you judge any of it. Melanin that took years of sun to build does not leave in a fortnight, and anything promising otherwise is either overstating its case or relying on you not measuring.

On the language

You will see "whitening" and "fairness" on these packs, including ours — that is what the products are called in the Pakistani trade and we have not renamed them. But the thing worth targeting is evenness: dark spots, sun marks, patches that never faded, tone that changed after a breakout.

Even, healthy skin is the goal. Not a different one.
